Q:After watching videos, speaking to friends and playing the betas I'm extremely concerned that this game will be a "1 button wonder" with regards to elementalists aoe. Is this the case with whats to come? Or is this actually being looked at by Arenanet and hopefully nerfed?
A1:Most (all?) player AOE is limited to 5 targets. Arrow carts are AOE, and were a tad strong in BWE1, but the damage was reduced for BWE2. I have yet to be one shot by any of the other siege weapons, unless I stand in the red circles too long. I am not sure how much more of a nerf you may be looking for.
A2:Pretty sure AoE ele damage was reduced from BWE 1. Furthermore, 5 targets max and staff Ele abilities have a long cool down. 1 ele can't spam 4 AoE dd spells there just isnt 4 High damage AoE abilities with staff etc. Only class that can spam AoE's is bomb engie and they are pbaoe.
A3:Ignore the sarcastic people.
Every MMO with mass pvp i played was dominated by ranged aoe classes. Some to the point, there was no point having any other classes at all a victor was decided by who had more aoe casters. Combine that with lag (try playing melee when you lag as hell), massive damage and CCs and you have a reason why it was so.
That said, GW2 tries to address that - the performance in combat is mostly good, AoEs are limited to 5 persons per circle. However that does not solve the problem.[gw2 gold=www.gw2gold.net] Concentrated AoE fire, combined with CC is still the best thing one can do in WvW. You dont have to wonder if ranged aoe classes will be the most effective in WvW - they already are.
However not to a degree as it sometimes is in other games. But people will realize how powerful they are when they see more groups with many casters - at the moments, most are mixed, having all the classes people personally love to play. Elementalists dont stand out so much, apart from flashy effects and bomb squads. However make it x20 and feel the difference. And that combined with CC and those classes mobility. CC, especially cripple, is easily awailable - and unlike SPVP abilities to remove effects are not as effective in WvW, since you`ll just get another one immidiately.
Overall - excessive presence of AoE in massive combat is as bad for gameplay as excessive presence of CC. The third "evil" being a focus/spike.I hope Arena net will balance it out somehow, for all classes, to make fighting enjoyable for all.
Though even if there will never be actual class vs class balance in WvW, i at least hope each class will have a clear defined role in WvW - so that even if ranged AoE would be the main factor, other classes would have their own clear , not situational, uses.
