Q:I'm seriously thinking of playing Engineer for PvE/WvWvW and grenades seem a fun weapon to use.
But as I'm still new to the whole building thing and couldn't play during the last BWE, I have several questions I hope you'll be able to answer.
- I was thinking of using grenades and bombs : is that useful ? or should I keep only one kit ?
- Inventions and Alchemy : can I "forget" to put points in those lines without condemning myself to a nearly perpetual downed state ?
- does using a kit and then going back to the pistols (or rifle) count as swapping to the weapons ?
Thanks by advance
A1:I love the bombs myself. I use them as my "melee" weapon set. I also like to trait them to heal. When your spamming 1 every second or 2 with a 150+ish heal per bomb, it is handy in a group fight especially. The nads are great for range. The grenades take some getting used to though.
In my opinion the traits lines work best when used for the traits themselves. I, personally find it best t ignore the stat benefits.(gw2 gold web:www.gw2gold.net) You can gear for the defensive side of things if you chose.
I am not sure if it counts, it didn't before, but I never tested it this BWE
A2:If it's in WvW I might not use both grenades and bombs in one build because of what coglin said, bombs are melee and grenades are ranged. They fulfill two different roles. In sPvP however, most combat is pretty close range to begin with and you don't wan to throw grenades at the max range most of the time in sPvP or people can easily avoid them. You can use both kits in a very close range and in that case it wouldn't be a bad idea because traits that buff "explosions" would help with both. You also get quite a few fields between those two kits, 4 I believe, and one of my favorite multi-kit traits Kit Refinement (Tools IV) will make even more explosions as you switch between them.
I also agree that you should generally go down a trait line for a specific trait and not the stats. There are exceptions, for me when I'm looking for where to put that last 10 points in my build and no one particular trait jumps out at me I do look at which would give me the most favorable stats. If you're stuck between which traits to choose, the stats that the particular line will give can often help make the decision for you.
I don't believe swapping kits counts as weapon swap. I'm not sure if we need it to because we can get bonuses for "when swapping to a kit" through traits and even some gear (kits are "bundles") so it's not like we're missing out on any functionality.
